Gus returns from the war where is has worked in secret operations interviewing prisoners with his new wife but don't expect light reading of the romantic kind, "The New Mrs Clifton" is much more than that. Krista leaves Germany, broken, abused and arrives to the hostility and austerity of not only England but the two sisters-in-law and the jilted fiancé who are all damaged too. Julia lost her pilot husband in the war and becomes drawn into the seedy world of Teddy the old close friend of Gus and brother to Nella. Tilly has her own secrets which are the root of the lifestyle she chooses. Post war London is vividly displayed both in mood and attitude. Absorbed from the start, the story unfolds and Krista gradually starts to mend, inner strength and fortitude are the backbone of the story, well written and with wonderful insight, a thought provoking read.
