The life of seventy-nine-year-old pensioner Peggy Smart is as beige as the decor in her retirement village. Her week revolves around aqua aerobics and appointments with her doctor, and the highlight of her day is watching her neighbour Brian head out for his morning swim. Peggy dreams of inviting the handsome widower, treasurer of the residents' committee and one of the few eligible men in the village, to an intimate dinner. As a woman of a certain age, however, she fears she has become invisible, even to men in their eighties. But a chance encounter with a glamorous old school friend she hasn't seen in five decades sets Peggy on an unexpected journey of self-discovery. Can she channel her 'inner Helen Mirren' and find happiness in her twilight years?

This was a very easy and lighthearted read. It was also very humorous. Peggy is the main character. She's 79, single, widowed and frumpy. Then along comes her old friend who she hasn't seen for years, who is also almost 80, trendy and up for fun. The book is so well written and I fell in love with the main characters. Peggy used to come out with all these sayings and get all her words wrong. I had my favourites, for example "It was a wonder Angie had lived so long on this fandangle diet, and a miracle she hadn't contacted wisteria along the way" and when talking about germs she said " I never worried about having a few harmless orgasms on the kitchen worktop". It just made me laugh in so many places. The characters come to life in the book, which makes it flow nicely. The reason I dropped it a star was just the way it ended, but you'll have to read it to find out if you agree with me. A great cosy read. #Diveinto25. Part of my reading challenge with the library.
