Note: 1976, rural South Africa: a family massacre has taken place, and the only witness is a black maid. Hendrik Deyer is the principal of a state-run school camp who lives nearby with his wife and their two sons, Werner and Marius. As Hendrik becomes obsessed with uncovering what happened, his wife worries about her neighbours, a poor white family whose malign influence on her son Werner is - she believes - making his behaviour inexplicably strange and hostile. Then, one night, another tragedy changes each of their lives irrevocably. General adult

Note: Published outside the British Isles The sea has flooded the earth. North lives on a circus boat, floating between the scattered islands that remain. She dances with her beloved bear, while the rest of the crew trade dazzling and death-defying feats for food from the islanders. However, North has a secret that could capsize her life with the circus. Callanish lives alone in her house in the middle of the ocean, with only the birds and the fish for company. As penance for a terrible mistake, she works as a gracekeeper, tending the graves of those who die at sea. What drove her from home is also what pulls her towards North. When a storm creates a chance meeting between the two girls, their worlds change. General adult

Note: Published outside the British Isles From the bathing huts of Ramsgate to the hovels of Soho, from a surreptitious life in Manchester to a notorious one on the handsome new parade that is London's Regents Park Road, we follow Lizzie and the Engels household as it struggles to match its communist principles with its hunger for the high life. At the heart of all the revolutionary tumult stands the woman who will one day become Mrs Engels, as compelling and charismatic a figure as ever walked the streets of Victorian England, or its novels. Note: Berlin, September 1872. The Duncker brothers, Max and Wolfgang, own a thriving publishing business in the city. Clever, irresponsible Max is as fond of gambling and brothels as the older, wiser, Wolfgang is of making a profit. When Max's bad habits get out of hand, Wolfgang sends him to the Spa town of Homburg, to dance attendance upon a celebrity author - the enigmatic Sibyl, also known as George Eliot. As enthralling and intelligent as her books, she soon has Max bewitched. Yet Wolfgang has an ulterior motive: for his brother to consider Sophie von Hahn, daughter of a wealthy family friend, as a potential wife. General adult

Note: It is now 100 years since drugs were first banned. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, 30,000-mile journey into the war on drugs to uncover its secrets - and he found that there is a startling gap between what we have been told and what is really going on. As strange as it may seem at first, drugs are not what we have been told they are; addiction is not what we think it is; and the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens. In 'Chasing the Scream', Hari reveals his startling discoveries entirely through the true and shocking stories of people across the world whose lives have been transformed by this war. General adult

This is a fascinating read. Initially I picked this book up thinking that it was about mental health like Lost Connections, but got ‘hooked’ into the story & science behind drugs prohibition. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in anything to do with being human!

This seemingly innocuous moment of distraction is the first sign of the slow disintegration of her mind. As Alzheimer's disease sets in and language increasingly escapes her, her son attempts to gather the fragments of what she has become, writing a moving, loving chronicle of the gradual descent into dementia of someone who 'no longer knows who she is, where she is or what will happen'. This is quite an epic novel-nearly 700 pages and very small type. It is complex in its structure and needs concentration to follow 'the plot'. Much of it is also in Jamaican patois [or pidgin English] so sentence construction is not straight forward. However, this should not deter you; I admit at times that I almost gave up but am glad that I perservered and throughly enjoyed reading it. Being a pensioner, Bob Marley is more than a character in this novel to me and, if this is a reflection of what happened, then I am better informed. I know that there is a basis of fact in this novel.
