I like the post-apocalypse stories because they usually show us the banality of life and humanity. The premise was interesting. The writing was neat. I like how the writer focuses more on how the survivor wants to live the world rather than how much sacrifice they have to do to stay alive in the first place.

Following multiple economic crises and a devastating flu pandemic, Europe has fractured into countless tiny nations, duchies, polities and republics. Recruited by the shadowy organisation 'Les Coureurs des Bois', Rudi is schooled in espionage, but when a training mission to The Line, a sovereign nation consisting of a trans-Europe railway line, goes wrong, he is arrested, beaten and Coureur Central must attempt a rescue. With so many nations to work in, and identities to assume, Rudi is kept busy travelling across Europe. But when he is sent to smuggle someone out of Berlin and finds a severed head inside a locker instead, a conspiracy begins to wind itself around him. General adult

I read this all in one morning. I have to say for a zombie apocalypse type novel it's gripping. It doesn't shy away from anything and touches on some very harsh lessons for the human characters involved. I think the ending is a good one since it's essentially writing yourself into a corner to have the human race all turned into zombies. Finding a cure would be miraculous but not that believable, killing them all would be impossible. So what do you do?

ABC Book Group. Some of us had seen the film and thought it followed the book well (the author wrote the film script so that was to be expected!). Bit wordy, over use of clunky similies. Bit American-ised. Frustrating that we didn't know how the Breakdown happened and why the fungus was there in the first place. Thought that Parks' character was a bit inconsistent. Was brutal at first then quite compassionate after they left the base. Built up an exciting conclusion. Too much description of 'Rosie' (the mobile lab), unnecessary. Was it a 'Road' novel'? Yes, a journey where the characters change and adapt to the developments around them. Use of present tense brings immediacy and fits with the story line. Shocking (when the find the Hungry with the baby carriage), visceral. 7/10.
