We learn many painful truths as shares his experiences, pains and first love. It's such a sad story told beautifully about being a child migrant not from any encounter with the police or authors but just the daily living with your "otherness".

Author: Stibbe, Nina
Year: 2020
Language: English
Interest category: General fiction novels
Media class: Paperback
Publisher: Penguin Books
Resource type: Physical
Note: Published outside the British Isles Lizzie Vogel is about to embark on grown-up life as she moves from the sheltered village existence of her family home and into the big, wide, metropolis that is Leicester. There she takes up the pioneering position of dental nurse to a dentist with bad teeth - and some deeply unpleasant attitudes. In her tiny one-bedroomed flat, Lizzie reflects on all that she's learning: whether she'll have to hold her boss's cigarette while he smokes it, whether she wants a boyfriend and, if she does, whether it should be Andy Nicolello who delivers the patients' dentures; and if it is Andy Nicolello whether it's dangerous to allow him to become her mother's lodger. Slowly it dawns on Lizzie that the area in which she has most to learn is life: in taking those first wobbly steps to independence, in falling in love, in navigating the ups and downs of adulthood and, most importantly, in staying cheerful through it all. If you enjoyed Man at the Helm and have watched Love, Nina on tv then you'll probably enjoy Reasons to be Cheerful. Light-hearted and madcap funny in places, the average adult reader will be more worldly-wise than Lizzie, who is leaving home for the first time to work at, and live above, a dentist practice in 1970s Leicester. She has much to learn about the adult world and generally finds out the hard way. Her naivety is appealing and leads to hilarious moments, but there is also sadness and I did cry at the end.

I couldn't finish this awful book. Not funny, not interesting and poorly written. It got great reviews and was described by some critic as a mix of Bridget Jones and Americanah - an insult to both books! I'm reading Americanah now and it's a wonderfully well written book which really challenges all of our race prejudices. Don't know how Queenie got such plaudits.
