Note: Bea and Dan, recently married, rent out their tiny flat to escape London for a few precious months. Driving through France they visit Bea's dropout brother Alex at the hotel he runs in Burgundy. Disturbingly, they find him all alone and the ramshackle hotel deserted, apart from the nest of snakes in the attic. When Alex and Bea's parents make a surprise visit, Dan can't understand why Bea is so appalled, or why she's never wanted him to know them; Liv and Griff Adamson are charming, and rich. They are the richest people he has ever met. Maybe Bea's ashamed of him, or maybe she regrets the secrets she's been keeping. Tragedy strikes suddenly, brutally, and in its aftermath the family is stripped back to its rotten core, and even Bea with all her strength and goodness can't escape. General adult

A sensitively written book about a boy on the edge of adulthood coming to terms with friendships, relationships, his sexuality. Whether it is semi autobiographical I don't know but from the detail about cello playing I tend to think so. Eustace reviews his childhood from his hospital bed where he has 24 hours alone to reflect on his life and loves.

Note: Caro Swanson has taken a job in a remote part of Scotland. She's answered an ad in The Lady: being a companion to an elderly gentleman who lives in a country estate could be perfect! Surely it is time to make a change and do something different for a while? The fact that she may also see Alec, the young man who she met some years previously and who she has always thought of as her 'one who got away', is of course purely incidental. Soon Caro is falling in love - not only with Alec but with the stunning house and grounds she is now living in. But the estate is in financial difficulties, and it quickly becomes apparent that there is only one way to rescue it. So begins a magical romantic summer that will take Caro to London to the south of France and back again to Scotland in search of a classic lost perfume that might just restore all their fortunes. Note: Brunetti's father-in-law, the Count Falier, urges Brunetti to investigate and intervene in the seemingly innocent plan of the Count's best friend, the elderly Gonzalo Rodríguez de Tejeda, to adopt a much younger man as his son. Under Italian inheritance laws this man would become heir to Gonzalo's entire fortune, a prospect Gonzalo's friends find appalling. For his part, Brunetti wonders why the old man can't be allowed his pleasure in peace. Not long after Gonzalo unexpectedly passes away, one of Gonzalo's oldest friends, just arrived in Venice for the memorial service, is strangled in her hotel room. Now with an urgent case to solve, Brunetti is drawn reluctantly into the long-hidden mystery in Gonzalo's life that ultimately led to murder. General adult

Note: Here is Paris as you have never seen it before - a city in which every building seems to hold the echo of an unacknowledged past, the shadows of Vichy and Algeria. American postdoctoral researcher Hannah and runaway Moroccan teenager Tariq have little in common, yet both are susceptible to the daylight ghosts of Paris. Hannah listens to the extraordinary witness of women who were present under the German Occupation; in her desire to understand their lives, and through them her own, she finds a city bursting with clues and connections. Out in the migrant suburbs, Tariq is searching for a mother he barely knew. For him in his innocence, each boulevard, Metro station and street corner is a source of surprise. General adult

Detective Inspector Siobhan Clarke is part of a new inquiry, combing through the mistakes of the original case. There were always suspicions over how the investigation was handled and now - after a decade without answers - it's time for the truth. Note: Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. The similarities end there; they are from very different worlds. When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years. This is an exquisite love story about how a person can change another person's life - a simple yet profound realisation that unfolds beautifully over the course of the novel. It tells us how difficult it is to talk about how we feel and it tells us - blazingly - about cycles of domination, legitimacy and privilege. General adult

A lasting friendship between Marianne & Connell from school through university to adulthood. Marianne lives in the "big house" Connell's mother cleans there employed by Marianne's. It's all about friendship, love, class, divisions, fitting in. Does it matter, do you/ can you reinvent yourself. At school Marianne doesn't fit in, at uni Connell feels he doesn't fit. Marianne has a darkness in her background from the unknown deceased father, the violence from her brother and hardness from her hardly mentioned mother. She accepts all the abuse feeling she is unworthy of love, can she ever be happy is the question she asks herself in the final pages. Is there anything she can feel good about? This won't be for everyone but I enjoyed it, For me a thought provoking read, what is that makes people "normal". "all these years they have been like two little plants sharing the same plot of soil, growing around one another, contorting to make room, taking certain unlikely positions"

Note: DCI Nelson has been receiving threatening letters telling him to 'go to the stone circle and rescue the innocent who is buried there'. He is shaken, not only because children are very much on his mind, with Michelle's baby due to be born, but because although the letters are anonymous, they are somehow familiar. They read like the letters that first drew him into the case of The Crossing Places, and to Ruth. But the author of those letters is dead. Or are they? Meanwhile Ruth is working on a dig in the Saltmarsh - another henge, known by the archaeologists as the stone circle - trying not to think about the baby. Then bones are found on the site, and identified as those of Margaret Lacey, a twelve-year-old girl who disappeared thirty years ago. As the Margaret Lacey case progresses, more and more aspects of it begin to hark back to that first case of The Crossing Places. General adult
