Paperback:Reasons to be cheerful:2020
Author: Stibbe, Nina
Year: 2020
Language: English
Interest category: General fiction novels
Media class: Paperback
Publisher: Penguin Books
Resource type: Physical
Note: Published outside the British Isles Lizzie Vogel is about to embark on grown-up life as she moves from the sheltered village existence of her family home and into the big, wide, metropolis that is Leicester. There she takes up the pioneering position of dental nurse to a dentist with bad teeth - and some deeply unpleasant attitudes. In her tiny one-bedroomed flat, Lizzie reflects on all that she's learning: whether she'll have to hold her boss's cigarette while he smokes it, whether she wants a boyfriend and, if she does, whether it should be Andy Nicolello who delivers the patients' dentures; and if it is Andy Nicolello whether it's dangerous to allow him to become her mother's lodger. Slowly it dawns on Lizzie that the area in which she has most to learn is life: in taking those first wobbly steps to independence, in falling in love, in navigating the ups and downs of adulthood and, most importantly, in staying cheerful through it all. If you enjoyed Man at the Helm and have watched Love, Nina on tv then you'll probably enjoy Reasons to be Cheerful. Light-hearted and madcap funny in places, the average adult reader will be more worldly-wise than Lizzie, who is leaving home for the first time to work at, and live above, a dentist practice in 1970s Leicester. She has much to learn about the adult world and generally finds out the hard way. Her naivety is appealing and leads to hilarious moments, but there is also sadness and I did cry at the end.

Note: Hannah, Cate and Lissa are young, vibrant and inseparable. Living on the edge of a common in East London, their shared world is ablaze with art and activism, romance and revelry - and the promise of everything to come. They are electric. They are the best of friends. Ten years on, they are not where they hoped to be. Amidst flailing careers and faltering marriages, each hungers for what the others have. And each wrestles with the same question: what does it take to lead a meaningful life? This is a story of the highs and lows of friendship - how it can dip, dive and rise again. It is also about muddling through: as a mother, a daughter, a wife, a rebel. Most of all, it explores that liminal space between expectation and reality, the place - full of dreams, desires and pain - in which we all live our lives. General adult

A brilliant and gripping thriller with lots of plot twists and turns. Quite dark and upsetting at times. I wasnt keen on the inclusion of transcripts, text messages etc, it interrupted the flow of the narrative.

Note: How long can you protect your heart? For years, rumours of the 'Marsh Girl' have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life - until the unthinkable happens. Truly extraordinary debut novel. The marshland the story centres on comes alive in your head. The descriptions of fear, loneliness, love, betrayal are so vivid. This book is sad yet heartwarming. It left me wanting to read so much more from this author.

Note: Queenie Jenkins can't cut a break. Well, apart from the one from her long term boyfriend, Tom. That's definitely just a break though. Definitely not a break up. Then there's her boss who doesn't seem to see her and her Caribbean family who don't seem to listen (if it's not Jesus or water rates, they're not interested). She's trying to fit in two worlds that don't really understand her. It's no wonder she's struggling. She was named to be queen of everything. So why is she finding it so hard to rule her own life? I really enjoying this book and found it super compelling. The writing style is easy to read - written in the first person from the perspective of Queenie as she navigates a break up, online dating, not being taken seriously in her career, her precarious mental health and a difficult relationship with her mum. Mixed in with Queenie's narrative are snippets of text and email conversations that make it a really quick but engrossing read. Queenie is a fantasically flawed and funny character, even though your watching the narrative unfold from her perspective, you as the reader are aware of how she's totally missing the reality of some situations and you're just really rooting for her to see it how it really is and love herself more! A really easy book to get absorbed in.
