Paperback:On earth we're briefly gorgeous:2020
Author: Vuong, Ocean
Year: 2020
Language: English
Interest category: General fiction novels
Media class: Paperback
Publisher: Vintage Books
Resource type: Physical
Note: 'On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous' is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family's history that began before he was born - a history whose epicentre is rooted in Vietnam - and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. General adult

Note: In deepest Cornwall, the mansion Kittiwake has seen many pass through its doors since it was bought by American heiress Peggy Carmichael 70 years ago. Over the decades, the keys have been handed down through the family, and now it belongs to Bel's adoptive brother, Lance. It's where he'll be celebrating his 50th birthday, and Bel is invited. Note: Queenie Jenkins can't cut a break. Well, apart from the one from her long term boyfriend, Tom. That's definitely just a break though. Definitely not a break up. Then there's her boss who doesn't seem to see her and her Caribbean family who don't seem to listen (if it's not Jesus or water rates, they're not interested). She's trying to fit in two worlds that don't really understand her. It's no wonder she's struggling. She was named to be queen of everything. So why is she finding it so hard to rule her own life? I really enjoying this book and found it super compelling. The writing style is easy to read - written in the first person from the perspective of Queenie as she navigates a break up, online dating, not being taken seriously in her career, her precarious mental health and a difficult relationship with her mum. Mixed in with Queenie's narrative are snippets of text and email conversations that make it a really quick but engrossing read. Queenie is a fantasically flawed and funny character, even though your watching the narrative unfold from her perspective, you as the reader are aware of how she's totally missing the reality of some situations and you're just really rooting for her to see it how it really is and love herself more! A really easy book to get absorbed in.

Note: Hannah, Cate and Lissa are young, vibrant and inseparable. Living on the edge of a common in East London, their shared world is ablaze with art and activism, romance and revelry - and the promise of everything to come. They are electric. They are the best of friends. Ten years on, they are not where they hoped to be. Amidst flailing careers and faltering marriages, each hungers for what the others have. And each wrestles with the same question: what does it take to lead a meaningful life? This is a story of the highs and lows of friendship - how it can dip, dive and rise again. It is also about muddling through: as a mother, a daughter, a wife, a rebel. Most of all, it explores that liminal space between expectation and reality, the place - full of dreams, desires and pain - in which we all live our lives. General adult
